It was back in 2002 when my journey to Certified Scalp Care Specialist started. I had no idea I was going to be a Certified Scalp Care Specialist (CSCS). Honestly, when I started doing hair professionally, it wasn’t because I loved it. I began doing hair because I was good at it and it was a trade that I could do while I was going to college. My plan was to use my hairstyling license to generate income for my family while I obtained my Pharm D. I gotta say y’all, it sounded like a good plan, until it didn’t. I graduated from cosmetology school and I attended Youngstown State University for undergrad coursework, which took me 4 years to complete. Then, I completed all the documentation to enroll into a doctorate program at Northeastern Ohio College of Medicine and Pharmacy.

I spent 2 years there and then… I dropped out! Hell yea, I dropped out of pharmacy school after my second year. Everyone, at least it felt like everyone, thought I failed because I dropped out. Hell, I felt like a little failure myself. I hated the way people looked at me. Their looks never matched the words. Their words would say it's gonna be okay, and their faces would say, ‘girl what the hell you gon do now, passing up all that money. You did all that work to get accepted to a pharmacy school and then you dropped out, what the hell?’ I could literally see the disappointment but I didn’t care. Their negative thoughts turned into white noise to me, annoying only if you let it be. I thought, I know what I want and they don’t pay my bills. I just made up my mind to trust my energy and be okay with my failures and successes.
In 2012, after 8 years in and out of school, I graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. I am glad I finished now, but at the time I had no idea what to do with a science degree. I seriously contemplated selling my bachelors on eBay. Lol. I’m just joking, I mean, apparently it doesn’t work like that.
Since the eBay thing didn’t work out, I decided to continue doing hair. By this time I had been doing hair for 10 years. If I said I didn’t love being a hairstylist by now, I was in complete denial.
1 year after graduating from Youngstown State University, I decided I needed to be my own boss. I was a commission stylist from 2002 until 2014. PSA*** I do not recommend this revenue devouring pathway. Commission styling was good for me when I was just starting out, but entrepreneurship is always the way to go if you ask me. I knew there was more to being a hairstylist, and I wanted to own my own salon. In 2014, I finally took the leap and opened my own salon, Brown Suga Studio.
In the intro, I mentioned not knowing I was going to be a Certified Scalp Care Specialist, and I truly had no clue. The universe was setting things in place for me. It was February 2020 when I learned why I went to college. I learned a new salon skill that made me happy as hell my Bachelors couldn’t be sold on eBay, LOL. My daughter’s aunt sent me a video on Instagram. It was a video of the Japanese Head Spa. I loved it! I immediately thought, “Is there a N!gga head spa?” Exact thought. I began looking into the process and the benefits of the service, essential oils, steam, massage and it looked amazing. As I learned more, I began to see a missing concept in hair care. We always talk about healthy hair, but we don’t talk about scalp care. After spending the year learning about this service, I used my science background to understand the importance of scalp care and how it benefits the clients I served. I read scientific articles on scalp disorders, read books and asked questions to clients to find out their exact problems. I began building the knowledge necessary to properly treat my client’s scalp disorders. It made me feel like an expert in my field. I was helping clients with the scalp care concerns and I understood the science behind it. The Head Spa combined my science background with my experience as a cosmetologist. This was a game changer for me. My mission is to make scalp care the foundation of all healthy hair decisions. That’s why I became a Certified Scalp Care Specialist. A Certified Scalp Care Specialist bridges the gap between cosmetologists and Trichologists. A trichologist studies the disorders of the hair and scalp but they are not licensed to practice hair. We as Cosmetologists learn about the scalp in hair school but that is the last time we use that info. Seriously, we style the hair, I think it was easy to miss the scalp. It's no one fault but it is time to change the way we view the hair care industry because “Scalp Care Is Hair Care”.
