Scalp Care Routines are the New Skin Care Routines

Create a healthy scalp with these pro tips and essential oils!

How many products do you have for your hair? How many products do you have for your scalp? Everybody wants healthy hair but we have to realize healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. The scalp is the foundation of healthy hair. Let's talk about why that is.

Most of your healthy hair goals stem from the health of your scalp. Whether it be the length, the shine, the thickness, decreasing the itchiness or flakiness, they all are connected to scalp health. Up until now, we were told to use shampoo and conditioners for healthy hair but now we are getting to the root of the problem and incorporating scalp care remedies for hair health. There is a scientific approach to what creates a strong foundation for healthy hair when it comes to scalp health and in this blog, we are gonna talk about it.

Why is Scalp Care Important?

Like the soil for your house plant or the skin prep before you apply makeup, the scalp is the foundation of healthy hair. The scalp is the skin of the head that is actually living. Hair is not dead. If it wasn’t you would bleed when you cut it. The scalp on the other hand is alive, you go deep enough there are blood vessels, nerve endings, fatty tissue, cellular matrix and roots.

In order for a hair strand to come out healthy, its roots must be in good condition. Just like the house plant I mentioned earlier. If your scalp is dry, grease covered and flaky you will have a hard time producing healthy hair. A clean, moisturized and product-free scalp provides an environment for the hair to flourish.

What About Your Scalp?

What hair goal are you trying to reach? You want it longer, softer, thicker, shinier or just healthier? Maybe your ends are splitting, it's dry and brittle or the itchiness is driving you crazy. These can all lead to unhealthy hair. Our scalp tells us when something is wrong. All of those symptoms are our scalps way of saying, it's time for a trim, you need more water or I don't like this product you are using. Let's go a little deeper:

Split ends- are caused from day to day activities like flat ironing, brushing, ponytails or maybe even your favorite hat. Ends should be trimmed every 3 to 4 months unless they are really bad. Trim the ends to keep them healthy so your hair won't break off at the bottom.

Alopecia- this is simply defined as hair loss. This can be caused from stress, malnutrition, anesthesia, extreme dieting, hereditary or too tight hairstyles. Be mindful of your hair as you experience different life challenges. Hair loss happens for many different reasons.

Itchy scalp- Many times this is caused by a product you are using or something you are eating that isn't agreeing with your scalp. Sometimes it's also because you aren't drinking enough water and your scalp is dry. Either way, it's important to cleanse your scalp regularly and stay hydrated.

Product build-up- This for sure will affect your hair. Your scalp needs oxygen just like your body does. If you have product buildup on your scalp, it can prevent the follicles from getting the oxygen they need to thrive.

Flaky Scalp- Dandruff, Seborrheic Dermatitis or Psoriasis. Consult with a Scalp Care Specialist or Dermatologist to understand how to combat the flakiness. There are many holistic solutions that can be recommended to help with the symptoms of these scalp disorders. (Read below to learn some essential oils that help with these problems.)

If you don't address these conditions early, they will worsen. Severe itchiness, excessive product build-up, severe flaky scalp can lead to scalp sores, split ends and alopecia. This can cause permanent damage if not addressed. If you are trying to avoid these outcomes, use some of the solutions recommended below that encourage a healthy scalp.

6 Essential Oils for Scalp Health

Our scalps are happy when they are clean and hydrated. However, just shampooing won't provide everything the scalp needs. Nothing replaces the hydration needed from water but here are some oils that help improve scalp health.

#1 Rosemary

You want to improve your scalp health? You should start with rosemary. Rosemary increases blood flow to the scalp and improves cellular regeneration.

#2 Peppermint

If you are experiencing dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis this is the essential oil for you. Peppermint is antimicrobial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and has pain relieving properties.

#3 Lavender

Not only does this essential oil provide relaxing properties because of its smell, it also promotes cellular growth, skin reproduction, increases the number of hair follicles and deepens hair follicle depth.

#4 Thyme

This essential oil is powerful when combating hair loss. It contains bioflavonoid compounds crucial for constructing new hair strands. It also blocks TGF-B1, the main reason for androgenic alopecia.

#5 Reishi mushroom extract

When you have androgenic alopecia is characterized by an excess amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is a hormone that aids in female pattern baldness.

#6 Tea Tree

Tea tree soothes itchiness, deep cleanses and has antifungal properties like peppermint.

Top-Notch Product for the Hair and Scalp

Even when you are shampooing your hair at home you need to be using professional products. In order to maintain the health of your scalp and hair you need to use the ingredients that nourish the scalp and hair.

Below is the shampoo and conditioner I use to maintain my clients healthy hair and scalp.

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner

This shampoo and conditioner is an amazing combination. It is top of the line when looking for products that nourish and cleanse the hair and scalp. The shampoo contains sunflower seed oil and aloe extract while the conditioner contains jojoba butter and rosemary leaf extract which we discussed earlier is excellent for hair growth.

When shampooing, emulsify the shampoo in your hand and apply throughout the hair and scalp. Wash the scalp and work your way to the ends of the hair for the ultimate nourishment and shine.
